University Statement

Throughout school I was always involved and interested in art and design projects and upon graduating I decided to take this further by studying graphic design at Fareham College. This course has enabled me to develop my passion for design and production, whilst also learning new genres and artists. My favourite design style is geometric, which I have been able to use through various projects, such as a unit on three-dimensional problem solving.

My design interests are concerned with space and colour. I enjoy using layout styles like the rule of thirds to create different focus points in my designs. I’m aware of the power of colour because of its effect on emotions and how certain designs can stimulate the viewer. I typically employ vibrant colour schemes in my work, yet it all depends on the project, where softer palettes can be used. I find the artwork of Philippe Starck to be engaging because he creates a warming environment in the commercial industry where he uses clean and calming elements.

In my spare time I enjoy creating multi-media artwork by using art techniques such as screen printing, cyanotypes and digitally manipulating work using Photoshop. I have had a few commissions, throughout college, the most recent was to create a logo for a fashion company called ‘Tiger’. I have an interest in textiles, where I enjoy traditional sewing and machine work, but I’m becoming aware of their influence within our environment.

My desire for interior design has been influenced from my parents. This is a result of working with my mother, who is a sewing machinist and my father, who is a floor layer. I have gained knowledge in the behaviour of different materials. By occasionally working with my father, he has helped me understand the health and safety aspects of anti- slip flooring and when certain materials won’t be appropriate to use.

I am aware that Southampton Solent have a wide range of facilities, like the machine testing laboratory and the reprographic studio. I would like to study here because through my research, the support and structure of the course looks fantastic. I’m keen to use the new facilities that Solent have to offer as well as the support from the lecturers. I believe that going to university will allow me to develop my skills and grow as an artist and designer, I’m looking forward to the challenge, but I am eager to learn the skills required to be an interior designer.
