Unit 10 final pieces

Final evaluation

During this project I believe that my strengths were research and experimentations. However, my weaknesses were planning and organisation as well as time management.

My secondary research was thorough and detailed with clear annotations and analysis. I also believe that my primary research is relevant as the litter picking and the analysis has allowed me to use the plastic found on the beach to create my final designs. In order to have stronger primary research, I could have evaluated my classmates knowledge by asking them to fill out a questionnaire. From the results I could determine their strengths and weaknesses. This could have enabled me to find facts and statistics more easily with a clear direction towards which facts and statistics I would like to have used.

I am happy with the amount of experimentations I have done. If I was to do this again, I would have liked to experiment with using the clear resin and plastic, which I didn’t have time for. My scanograms have had a clear impact on my final outcomes. This is due to being influenced by environmental artists like Fran Crowe and Mandy Barker. Overall, I have created over 70 scanograms, which I used to copy the plastics and apply them to my final designs. I am also happy with the variety of experimentations, which were scanograms and cyanotypes, that I have produced with art techniques. Throughout the creation of my posters, I also experimented with text styles as well as the placement of objects. I deliberately used a black background to represent a scanograms, however I could have experimented with different colours for the background.

My time management was terrible. I created a checklist of each task I had yet to complete, however I still found myself struggling for time against the deadline. This has also been a result of my laptop freezing and the WI-FI repeatedly dropping out, therefore I wasn’t able to work effectively as I wasn’t able to upload work to my blog. Although I am unorganised, I was able to complete my posters before the deadline. For my next projects I will aim to be better at time management by setting myself a task to do each week. This way I will be on top of the work load. However, I may not be able to upload my work frequently if the issue with my laptop and the WI-FI continues.

Another weakness of mine was planning and organisation. This is because I didn’t have a clear plan of how I was going to create my posters. Next time I will sketch out rough drawings of possible ideas of starting points. If I was able to plan my ideas better, then this would have allowed me to decide on a appropriate deadline, timeframe to complete my posters in. Therefore, this would allow me to complete the process of my work giving me enough time for my final evaluation. If I was to do this again I would be stricter on myself to ensure that I meet the deadline in enough time.

Overall, my project was success and I am happy with my 3 final posters. My chosen current affair for this project was plastic pollution, specifically in the ocean. I feel as if I have successfully created a hard-hitting ad by using the visuals of the plastics, as well as facts on plastic which effects the corresponding animals. If I was to do this again then I would ensure that I would ensure that I include more planning and also make the final pieces the same orientation. For my future projects I would like to explore solely with graphic design styles, instead of exploring art techniques.

Screen Shot 2018-11-27 at 15.38.33.pngI drew templates for my designs by using inspiration found online. This was to look at the similarities and differences between each breed of the different animals. I created the shape by using the scanned in template to arrange the plastic into the position.

I used the plastics on the documents to copy and paste. I had to resize the plastics so that they fit into the shape. I decided to make the backgrounds of all three posters black. This is so that they resemble the scanograms I completed earlier. If I had longer on this project, I would have experimented with different colours.

For the text I researched into facts and statistics regarding the chosen marine wildlife, I chose the most suitable fact for each poster. I used the Bahnschrift type face in white. I decided to use white because it is easy to see against the black background, it is also in contrast to the bright colours from the plastics. I added an inner bevel and emboss to add depth to the text. This would make the  work look more professional, in my opinion. I first of all just applied the text in a solid colour, however this didn’t look like it had the same effect as the the plastic animals.

I originally made all three of the posters portrait, however I rotated the whale and the fish poster to landscape. This is because the image looked better with this orientation. This is due to me having more room to enlarge the images, therefore making them more visible from far away.
