I am drawn to this competition because it will be a challenge as I have never done anything like this before. Although I would like to become an Interior Designer, I have not yet practiced the skills required. I also like that there isn’t an entrance fee and there is a prize of €4000.
The purpose of this competition is to create a futuristic pharmacy of approximately 170 square meters. The brief states that you can use high- tech materials such as steel and crystal or natural materials like wood. My main focus for this project is to meet the needs of the people. Therefore the interior space will have to be easily accessible to a range of people by focusing on getting wide doors which allow wheelchairs and buggies to get through. There will also be a children’s area to occupy them with a wide variety of bright coloured toys. However, they wont be small so this will prevent the risk of chocking. I will include a confidential room for the customers to be able to check their blood pressure or their insulin levels, therefore it is crucial that there is a disposable sharps bin available. This area also gives the customers the opportunity to ask a member of staff for confidential support.
My main focus is accessibility so I will have anti-slip flooring in line with the entrance of the door in a different colour of the rest of the floor to clearly suggest the walk way to the tills/ counter. Also behind the tills the floor will be anti-slip for the staff. This is so that the area is safe to work in when collecting prescription, also because there could be spillages from products. The project brief states that you can include your final design as well as your developmental work. The main focus of this project is to create a sustainable retail area, that meets the needs of the public. By designing an area that includes a staff room and toilet facilities, it is also meeting the needs of the staff.
Upon observation, my main concern with Pharmacies, Doctors and Hospitals is the lack of signage. This makes it easy to get lot and this causes confusion to many. In order to prevent this, I will ensure that there is clear signage as well as having all stock in braille as well as clear text. I will make sure that there is a wide range of seating to allow the customers the choice of sitting if they have to wait for their prescriptions.
