Unit 12 final pieces

Final evaluation

I prefer unit 12 to the other units we have completed this year because it was a different approach to meeting the criteria. I enjoyed the freedom of being able to choose which design competitions we were allowed to enter because this allowed me to enter a graphic design and an interior design competition.

I enjoyed the maths poster competition because I was able to work with geometric shapes and repetitive patterns. Overall I was happy with the outcome of the patterned background. However, I didn’t like the appearance of the text that I layered over the top, therefore, I didn’t like my final outcome. Typography isn’t my strong point so I should have spent longer to perfect this skill for my poster. Instead, I finished my poster on the day of the deadline and rushed the typography because I dedicated too much of my time to the pattern background. This is a result of my poor time management skills, although they are terrible, I am hoping that I will get better at this skill for my FMP.

A strength of mine from this poster competition was research into artists and techniques. I was extremely proud of the research into the optical illusions and the abstract geometric artist Wassily Kandinsky because it was the most detailed research I have completed. Another strength of mine is working in both Illustrator and Photoshop to create work with vector smart objects. This is a new skill that I have learnt from the deconstructing images workshop, and I can fairly say that I am now confident in working with these vectors.

One of my weaknesses was time management skills if I was better at this then I would have been able to enter all three of my chosen competitions, instead I was only able to enter two. Another weakness of mine is that I don’t use my spare time wisely this is because I procrastinate a lot. Therefore I didn’t meet the project deadline, although I did enter both competitions before their deadlines. I found it harder to manage my time in this project particularly because of the multiple projects that I had to prioritise and work with for me that made it difficult to organise my work and work effectively in my time scale.

Throughout the interior design competition, a strength of mine was detailed research to ensure that the products I decided to use were justified in comparison to the others. Although I didn’t include artist research because I didn’t feel that it was necessary for this project, I did research into different styles of interior design and architecture.

Overall, I am happy with the work I have produced for unit 12 this is due to the skills that I have gained from the independence of this unit. I will use the interior design skills to aid me in the design of my FMP. I will also continue to use my thorough research and developmental skills through my final project so I can get the distinction I am aiming for.

Final pieces

floor plan 1.jpg

This is my final floor plan with the measurements included. I am proud of this piece because I was stepping out of my comfort zone with this project as I have never done this before and I feel that I have succeeded, even if I don’t win the competition. A point that I would like to add is that all the doors are the same width, however, I didn’t show this on my floor plan. I decided to make them the same width so I was certain that each door will be widely accessible. I have tried my best to create an accessible and sustainable futurist pharmacy design, although this was a challenge I enjoyed it.

I included these in-depth keys to give a more thorough explanation of the items I chose to include and why. I was specific down to the colour and the materials used and how this ties in with my futuristic pharmacy.  I changed the text colour because it would be easier to read rather than it all being in black.

I decided to create a ceiling plan as well as a floor plan so that it was easy for anyone to see what I intended to create. Another reason why I created this is that I needed to include other elements I intend to use like the: lights, air conditioning units and security cameras.

Final Piece

pattern background 3.jpg

This is the final piece for the maths poster competition. I don’t like the text as it can be hard to read from afar, although I didn’t use jet black, I used a dark grey. I also added a light white shadow on the outside of the text to create some depth. I dislike the fact I used as it is too long. If I was to do this again I would dedicate more time to the typography and the research. For further experimentation I could have created a border along the edge. Or even make the background design smaller as it looks quite busy. I could have made the text smaller and put it at the bottom of the page with a cream background behind it.
